Admissions & the 11-Plus Process
Parkstone Grammar School is a selective secondary school for girls. This means that unlike comprehensive schools, admission is based on academic ability, which is assessed through an entrance examination commonly known as the 11-plus.
The BCP Coordinated Admissions Scheme
Like all state-funded secondary schools in the area, Parkstone Grammar participates in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) coordinated admissions scheme. This process ensures that parents only need to fill out one application form through their home local authority, even if they are applying to schools across different council borders.
The standard timeline for secondary school applications dictates that parents must submit their school preferences to their home local authority by 31 October when their child is in Year 6. On National Offer Day, which falls on 1 March (or the next working day), local authorities will send out the school allocation decisions. If a family is unhappy with the school they have been offered, the appeals process takes place during the spring and summer terms.
Selective Entry and Testing
Because Parkstone Grammar is a grammar school, simply listing it on the BCP application form is not enough. Prospective students must also register for and sit the entrance test, which takes place early in Year 6 (typically in September). The test assesses various skills to determine if a student is of the required academic standard for a grammar school environment.
Oversubscription and Catchment
Passing the entrance test does not guarantee a place. If more students pass the test than there are places available (the Published Admission Number or PAN), the school will apply its specific oversubscription criteria. Generally, priority is given to Looked After Children, those eligible for Pupil Premium who meet the standard, and then distance from the school, often defining a priority catchment area.
Because specific entrance test dates, exact oversubscription criteria, and the Published Admission Number can change year-to-year, parents must consult the authoritative sources for the most up-to-date information.
